Chinese Verbs You Must Know (Part 1)| HSK Vocabulary Practice (HSK1)

Welcome to the Chinese practice series — HSK Vocabulary Practice, level 1. You can use it to quickly review the HSK level 1 vocabulary.

This series is just the extra part of our elementary Chinese courses. For systematic learning, please choose the full courses (Chinese Pinyin, HSK Level 1 & HSK Level 2, Character Level 1).

For each word of this series, first you will hear and see it with pinyin and meaning, followed by the example sentence and translation, including the word-by-word translation.

In today’s lesson, we’ll start with verbs.

HSK-1 Verbs (Part 1)

爱(ài): to love

我爱北京的秋天。

Wǒ ài Běijīng de qiūtiān.

(I love Beijing -‘s autumn)

I love autumn in Beijing.

 

帮(bāng): to help

我可以帮你学中文。

Wǒ kěyǐ bāng nǐ xué Zhōngwén.

(I can help you learn Chinese)

I can help you learn Chinese.

 

帮忙(bāngmáng): to help; to do a favor

你可以帮我一个忙吗?

Nǐ kěyǐ bāng wǒ yī gè máng ma?

(you can do me a favor ma)

Can you do me a favor?

 

差(chài): be less than; be short of

现在差五分十点。

Xiànzài chà wǔ fēn shí diǎn.

(now short of five minutes ten o’clock)

It’s five to ten now. / It’s fifty-five now.

 

唱(chàng): to sing

你唱得真好听。

Nǐ chàng de zhēn hǎotīng.

(you sing really pleasant to hear)

You sing really well.

 

唱歌(chànggē): to sing (a song)

很多人喜欢在浴室唱歌。

Hěn duō rén xǐhuan zài yùshì chànggē.

(many people like in bathroom sing)

Many people like to sing in the bathroom.

 

吃(chī): to eat

我们中午吃什么?

Wǒmen zhōngwǔ chī shénme?

(we noon eat what)

What do we eat for lunch?

 

吃饭(chīfàn): to have a meal

他喜欢和家人一起吃饭。

Tā xǐhuan hé jiārén yīqǐ chīfàn.

(he like with family member together have a meal)

He likes having meals with his family.

 

出来(chūlái): to come out

我到了,你出来吧。

Wǒ dào le, nǐ chūlái ba.

(I arrived, you come out)

I’m here, please come out.

 

出去(chūqù): to go out

外面太热了,我不想出去。

Wàimiàn tài rè le, wǒ bù xiǎng chūqù.

(Outside too hot, I don’t want go out)

It’s too hot outside and I don’t want to go out.

 

穿(chuān): to wear

她爱穿红色的衣服。

Tā ài chuān hóngsè de yīfu.

(she love wear red clothes)

She loves to wear red clothes.

 

打车(dǎchē): to take a taxi

我们打车去机场吧。

Wǒmen dǎchē qù jīchǎng ba.

(we take a taxi go airport)

Let’s take a taxi to the airport.

 

打电话(dǎ diànhuà): to make a call

我现在很忙,晚上给你打电话。

Wǒ xiànzài hěn máng, wǎnshàng gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà.

(I now very busy, night to you make a call)

I’m busy right now, so I’ll call you tonight.

 

打开(dǎkāi): to open; to turn on

请打开你的礼物。

Qǐng dǎkāi nǐ de lǐwù.

(please open your gift)

Please open your gift.

别打开电视,妈妈在睡觉呢。

Bié dǎkāi diànshì, māma zài shuìjiào ne.

(don’t turn on TV, mom is sleeping)

Don’t turn on the TV, mom is sleeping.

 

打球(dǎqiú): to play a ball game

他会打篮球,不会打网球。

Tā huì dǎ lánqiú, bú huì dǎ wǎngqiú.

(he can play basketball, cannot play tennis)

He can play basketball, but not tennis.

 

到(dào): to arrive

我一个小时后到家。

Wǒ yī gè xiǎoshí hòu dào jiā.

(I one hour after arrive home)

I’ll be home in an hour.

 

得到(dédào): to get; to obtain

她想得到这个工作。

Tā xiǎng dédào zhè gè gōngzuò.

(she want get this job)

She wants to get this job.

 

等(děng): to wait

请等一下,医生马上来。

Qǐng děng yīxià, yīshēng mǎshàng lái.

(please wait a while, doctor right away come)

Please wait a while, the doctor will be here soon.

 

动(dòng): to move

我现在太累了,真的不想动。

Wǒ xiànzài tài lèi le, zhēnde bù xiǎng dòng.

(I now too tired, really don’t want move)

I’m exhausted and really don’t want to move right now.

 

读(dú): to read

Zhè gè Hànzì zěnme dú?

(this Chinese character how read)

How do you read this Chinese character?

 

读书(dúshū): to read a book; to attend school

他喜欢睡觉前读一会儿书。

Tā xǐhuan shuìjiào qián dú yīhuìr shū.

(he like sleep before read a while book)

Before going to bed, he likes to read for a while.

你在哪个大学读书?

Nǐ zài nǎ gè dàxué dúshū?

(you at which university attend school)

Which university do you attend?

 

放(fàng): to put

他在书包里放了两个苹果。

Tā zài shūbāo lǐ fàng le liǎng gè píngguǒ.

(he in the schoolbag put two apple)

He put two apples in the schoolbag.

 

放假(fàngjià): to have a holiday or vacation

明天是新年,我们会放假一天。

Míngtiān shì xīnnián, wǒmen huì fàngjià yī tiān.

(tomorrow is New Year, we will have a holiday one day)

Tomorrow is New Year’s Day and we will have a day off.

 

放学(fàngxué): school is over (for the day)

他们下午四点半放学。

Tāmen xiàwǔ sì diǎn bàn fàngxué.

(they afternoon half past four school is over)

They leave school at 4:30 pm.

 

飞(fēi): to fly

我们明天早上八点飞上海。

Wǒmen míngtiān zǎoshang bā diǎn fēi Shànghǎi.

(we tomorrow morning 8 o’clock fly Shanghai)

We fly to Shanghai at 8 am tomorrow.

 

干(gàn): to do

你放学后干什么?

Nǐ fàngxué hòu gàn shénme?

(you school is over after do what)

What do you do after school?

 

告诉(gàosu): to tell

请告诉我你的名字。

Qǐng gàosu wǒ nǐ de míngzi.

(please tell me your name)

Please tell me your name.

 

给(gěi): to give

服务员,可以给我一杯水吗?

Fúwùyuán, kěyǐ gěi wǒ yī bēi shuǐ ma?

(waiter/waitress, could give me a glass of water)

Waiter, could you give me a glass of water?

 

工作(gōngzuò): to work

他在一家日本公司工作。

Tā zài yī jiā Rìběn gōngsī gōngzuò.

(he in a Japanese company work)

He works in a Japanese company.

差(chài): be less than; be short of

现在差五分十点。

Xiànzài chà wǔ fēn shí diǎn.

(now short of five minutes ten o’clock)

It’s five to ten now. / It’s fifty-five now.

 

唱(chàng): to sing

你唱得真好听。

Nǐ chàng de zhēn hǎotīng.

(you sing really pleasant to hear)

You sing really well.

 

唱歌(chànggē): to sing (a song)

很多人喜欢在浴室唱歌。

Hěn duō rén xǐhuan zài yùshì chànggē.

(many people like in bathroom sing)

Many people like to sing in the bathroom.

 

吃(chī): to eat

我们中午吃什么?

Wǒmen zhōngwǔ chī shénme?

(we noon eat what)

What do we eat for lunch?

 

吃饭(chīfàn): to have a meal

他喜欢和家人一起吃饭。

Tā xǐhuan hé jiārén yīqǐ chīfàn.

(he like with family member together have a meal)

He likes having meals with his family.

 

出来(chūlái): to come out

我到了,你出来吧。

Wǒ dào le, nǐ chūlái ba.

(I arrived, you come out)

I’m here, please come out.

 

出去(chūqù): to go out

外面太热了,我不想出去。

Wàimiàn tài rè le, wǒ bù xiǎng chūqù.

(Outside too hot, I don’t want go out)

It’s too hot outside and I don’t want to go out.

 

穿(chuān): to wear

她爱穿红色的衣服。

Tā ài chuān hóngsè de yīfu.

(she love wear red clothes)

She loves to wear red clothes.

 

打车(dǎchē): to take a taxi

我们打车去机场吧。

Wǒmen dǎchē qù jīchǎng ba.

(we take a taxi go airport)

Let’s take a taxi to the airport.

 

打电话(dǎ diànhuà): to make a call

我现在很忙,晚上给你打电话。

Wǒ xiànzài hěn máng, wǎnshàng gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà.

(I now very busy, night to you make a call)

I’m busy right now, so I’ll call you tonight.

 

打开(dǎkāi): to open; to turn on

请打开你的礼物。

Qǐng dǎkāi nǐ de lǐwù.

(please open your gift)

Please open your gift.

别打开电视,妈妈在睡觉呢。

Bié dǎkāi diànshì, māma zài shuìjiào ne.

(don’t turn on TV, mom is sleeping)

Don’t turn on the TV, mom is sleeping.

 

打球(dǎqiú): to play a ball game

他会打篮球,不会打网球。

Tā huì dǎ lánqiú, bú huì dǎ wǎngqiú.

(he can play basketball, cannot play tennis)

He can play basketball, but not tennis.

 

到(dào): to arrive

我一个小时后到家。

Wǒ yī gè xiǎoshí hòu dào jiā.

(I one hour after arrive home)

I’ll be home in an hour.

 

得到(dédào): to get; to obtain

她想得到这个工作。

Tā xiǎng dédào zhè gè gōngzuò.

(she want get this job)

She wants to get this job.

 

等(děng): to wait

请等一下,医生马上来。

Qǐng děng yīxià, yīshēng mǎshàng lái.

(please wait a while, doctor right away come)

Please wait a while, the doctor will be here soon.

 

动(dòng): to move

我现在太累了,真的不想动。

Wǒ xiànzài tài lèi le, zhēnde bù xiǎng dòng.

(I now too tired, really don’t want move)
