why did you use the word” shihou” in the sentence :
mei nian yiyue shi zui leng de shihou”
    why not ” tianqi”

    • Zheng-Tao

      Marie, nǐ hǎo!

When we use “shì” to connect two nouns or noun phrases in Chinese, the two parts on both sides of “shì” should be matched, for example, “yīyuè” means “January”, which is a time word, and “shíhòu” means “time”, so they are matched, the sentence “Měi nián yīyuè shì zuì lěng de shíhòu” means “January is the coldest time of the year”. However, we cannot use “shì” to connect “yīyuè” and “tiānqì” in Chinese, because “yīyuè shì tiānqì” doesn’t make any sense.

If you want to put “tiānqì” in the sentence, it’s supposed to be “Měi nián yīyuè de tiānqì zuì lěng”, which can be translated as “The weather in January is the coldest.”

Just let me know if you have any other questions.

Shanghai’s Weather in Four Seasons | Chinese (HSK Level 2) Practice

Welcome to the series— Practice Your Chinese, HSK level 2. It’s designed to provide the HSK level 2 students with the most suitable materials for practicing Chinese. It can also be used for preparing the HSK level 2 test.

This practice series is just the extra part of our elementary Chinese courses, so if you want to learn Chinese in a systematic and efficient way, please choose the full courses (Chinese Pinyin, HSK Level 1 & HSK Level 2).

In each video of this series, first you listen to a story or dialogue at normal speed to get the main idea. Second, listen to the same material but at a much lower speed, and at the same time complete each sentence by filling in the blank with the words or phrases you hear. Lastly, answer a few questions about the story or dialogue.

In today’s Chinese (HSK Level 2) practice lesson, you’re going to hear about Shanghai’s weather in four seasons.

上海一年有四个季节:春天、夏天、秋天和冬天。

四月和五月是上海的春天,天气很暖和,很少下雨。

十月和十一月是上海的秋天,天气很凉快很舒服。

上海冬天很少下雪。每年一月是最冷的时候,最低气温大概零下五度。
